Designing Websites for Nonprofits, Small Businesses, Bands, and Weddings

Chimpy Design Studios focuses its creative efforts on weddings and the start–up/under–developed nonprofit, small business, or band. I specialize in XHTML design and do not design Flash websites. PHP and JavaScript can be implemented into your website, but I am not a developer, I am a website designer; developers write the scripts, I make them work on your website. I have designed WordPress themes, but that is not my area of expertise. Search engine friendly, W3C valid, XHTML websites are my specialty.

Real-Life Examples

Fairy Tales Formals: Currently the only company in Massachusetts that rents and sells women's and men's formalwear, Fairy Tales Formals wanted to step up its online visibility. They had a website, but it really needed some work; it was nothing more than a white background with black text. The owner contacted me and asked if I could help her out. Of course, I said, and went to work on it right away.

Each step of the way I sent her a link to preview the progress. We worked together to develop each new page. I set–up a photo shoot with a professional photographer so we could include a photo gallery on her website. I helped her get out of a hosting service that was ripping her off and into a better one. And within a couple weeks, the new Fairy Tales Formals website was launched and representing her company in a whole new way.

One feature she really wanted was a password protected photo gallery that she could manage for her customers. Specifically, she wanted a way to upload photos of her customers into their own gallery that she could password protect to eliminate any privacy concerns. Once the photos were in the gallery, her customers could share the information with their friends and family so they could help choose the right dress or tuxedo.

The idea was innovative and while she said that cost to impliment this wouldn't be a problem, I found a great way to do it that cost her nothing at all by using an open source (free) script called Zenphoto. The script was completely integrated into her new website and works better than she ever imagined.

We continue working together on photo shoots and website updates, and I look forward to working with Fairy Tales Formals for a long time.

 

Special Kindness In Packages, Inc.: The first nonprofit organization I had the opportunity to work with is Special Kindness In Packages. This nonprofit is one of several organizations that send care packages to deployed US military members around the world, but this particular one was started in honor of me when I deployed to Iraq in 2004, and their website demonstrates the ability to obtain high ranking search engine results.

In 2006 I began working on the nonprofit's website and held offices as the Vice President, Executive Director, and President of Special Kindness In Packages, or SKIP for short over the next 3 years. The SKIP website currently ranks on the first page of results for almost all of the most popular search engine queries related to military care packages.

The rules are simple.

  1. The applicant must:
    • not have an existing website1
    • provide logo and/or other images for website2
    • secure web hosting before design process begins3
  2. On the first of each selection month one selected nonprofit, small business, band, or soon–to–be bride and groom will be notified via email. The selected applicant will have 3 business days to respond or the offer will go to another applicant.
  3. The design process may take up to one month
  4. 10 page maximum for the free design

1 existing website means any website that was specially designed for promoting business, event, or services/products. Social networking sites are not existing websites.

2 any photos/images you specifically want displayed on your website must be provided before design process begins. If no images are provided, stock photography will be used as placeholders.

3 Chimpy Design Studios will need access to your web server while designing your website. View the resources page for a few of our website hosting recommendations.

My goal is to provide you with a search engine and user friendly website design that will keep your customers coming back and attract new customers to you. In doing so, I will use a combination of design elements that will prove attractive and useful to your custom design. I do this because your satisfaction is my greatest reward.

It is your job to provide me with the images and fundamental text for your website. I may use all of the text and images you provide or I may only use a small portion of them, but rest assured, I want your website to be successful and before going "live" you will have the final decision for each web page.

My 9 step schedule for designing your website is this:
  1. compile information from you
  2. help you secure good web hosting (if necessary)
  3. create preliminary content ideas and site map
  4. create basic page design (limited text and graphics)
  5. create basic website layout (limited text and graphics)
  6. finalize content
  7. finalize design
  8. upload your new website
  9. teach you how to access admin files (if necessary)

At each stage of the schedule I will send an e–mail to you providing an opportunity to review and approve the progress before I continue. The length of time to finish each stage will depend heavily on the complexity of your website and I will offer you my undivided attention throughout the entire duration of this schedule... because nothing is more important to me than your satisfaction.

As a result, I will not reveal the identity of individuals without prior agreement, and only then will first name and last initial be used on public documents. An exception to this policy will be for billing purposes, of course.

Chimpy Design Studios understands the importance of getting a good value for services and products. Therefore, I commonly refer clients/customers to outside businesses for website hosting. These referrals are only suggestions, not requirements for clients/customers.
